Born Yesterday
A Comedy by Garson Kanin
Prouduced by arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.
Romance and politics don't mix, and when the two clash, the results are hilarious.
In this famous comedy by Garson Kanin, one of the longest running plays in Broadway history, vulgar, egotistic junkman Harry Brock has come to a swanky hotel in Washington to make crooked deals with governement big-wigs. He has brought with him the charming but dumb ex-chorus girl Billie, whose lack of social graces embarrasses even Harry. To give her a little class, Brock hires the young, idealistic magazine reporter Paul Verrall, who has been investigating political skullduggery.
As Billie gets smarter, she and Paul fall in love, and she comes to realize the extent of Harry's crooked schemes. She rebels against the junkman and his ambitious effort to defraud the public, and helps Paul get hold of incriminating documents. At the end, Paul and his promising pupil turn their backs on the anti-social and anti-democratic Brock and strike out on their own.
Written in 1946, Born Yesterday demonstrates that very little has changed in the world of political machination. Kanin's wise, witty comedy could have been written yesterday and taken from current headlines.
